corphead
Slide1A show we did earlier in the year and it still applies at this moment….why the pharmaceutical sales industry is no longer a safe haven.
I’m asked all the time about opportunities in the pharmaceutical sales business and my answer is the same…..it’s NOT what it used to be. Please checkout this “Re-Play” show that asks two top Pharma Execs their opinion on where the pharma industry has gone and what the future has in store for this once extremely prosperous industry.

Just “SELL” please…..loose the distractions!

Why Do Leaders FAIL at..managing CRISIS?

Why Do Leaders FAIL at..managing CRISIS?

Hey, I have to get something off my chest! I talk to sales professionals literally every day and it’s been recently where I’ve felt like saying “Why are you in the selling business?! I hear constantly nothing but complaints from sales people that have nothing to do with their #1 job “Selling” & “Closing” for the business. So, my question to you my “Loving” sales professionals why do salespeople often complain about things outside of their control rather than just rolling up their sleeves and doing what they’re supposed to do……”SELL”?

“My computer doesn’t work”, “My numbers are incorrect” (which sometimes has validity), “My Company Car Sucks”, “My Customers are Terrible”, “My Customers are mean”, “My Boss hates me”, “My Hair hurts”…….I can go on and on but I think you get my point. What are your thoughts on this?
Thanks!!

What I learned from “Rockie”……

beautiful rockie

Rockie passed away last night March 14, 2013 8:30pm (EST) she was 14 years old……….please pardon me I have to walk away from the keyboard to blow my nose from crying.

It’s been 14 years past the expected time for most dogs to expire so we were blessed with Rockie’s presence unrealistically for a considerable time. However, it still hurts it hurts so much that my wife and I really thought Rockie was going to be around after we left this earth……a fantasy/dream that was broken up abruptly last night. As I left for work the morning of the 14th of March Rockie had a spring in her step as she ran up to me for a kiss, her sister Tuffy (who we still have and is our solace from last night’s events) often times competes with Rockie for my affection…..this is EVERY morning. Well, when I returned home from work yesterday something was different Rockie and Tuffy who typically rush to the door to greet me this time it was just Tuffy honoring my arrival. As I screamed almost to the top of my lungs for Rockie I noticed walking around the corner Rockie laying still on her floor pad in the living room. Rockie was awake sitting up staring at me no longer with this excitement but with this sense of malaise. As I walked over to her it appeared she hadn’t moved since the moment I left for work, and it was heartbreaking as she just looked up at me with this stare. I tried to pick her up so that she would be able to stand on her feet…….but she couldn’t, I tried to carry her outdoors to go to the bathroom….but she couldn’t. She just became limp as she stared at me as if to say “Andre I’m sorry I love you but it’s time for me to go”…….please pardon me I have to walk away from the keyboard to blow my nose from crying.
While this is a cliff note version of what really happened last night as I witnessed my 2nd best friend (after my wife) go away right before my eyes I didn’t want to give the granular play by play simply because I can’t without crying. However, I do want to go over what Rockie has taught me in the last 14 years and hopefully those of you who have experienced a loss like I have last night will know exactly how I feel right now and why sometimes the best lessons can come from your pets.

What I learned from Rockie

•Rockie was a very affectionate dog, I can personally improve in this area and she’s taught me it’s not difficult or time consuming to “Kiss” the ones you love when they’re alive…..and not when they’ve died.

•Rockie was a beautiful black retriever mixed with chow and she had the confidence and humility to not be worried how people viewed her……I’m a black man who has experienced such thinking and after my time with Rockie I’ve learned to not waste my time but enjoy the pigment God has blessed me with.

•Rockie was a “Servant Leader” she took great care of Tuffy (our 2nd dog) often times at the expense of her personal needs; I’ve now incorporated that attribute in my life by being a mentor and servant to the unfortunate. Before Rockie I was a selfish pig.

•Rockie never cared about the “spotlight” often yielding to Tuffy who can be a little princess sometimes (haha!). I’ve always been one who feels the need to compete for the “spotlight”….after learning from Rockie that sometimes those behind the scenes garner the most respect….I’ve changed that thinking.

•Rockie was an extremely focused dog often relentlessly looking for her ball as if it was her last meal, once she set her mind on something the objective was going to be met. I pride myself on getting things done, but, I’ve never had the focus as sharp as Rockie’s and it’s a development goal I continue to work on.

•Rockie went out on her own terms, no pain, no discomfort and her best friend by her side……me. I can only pray I have that good fortune when I leave this world.

•Rockie behaved like every day was the best day of her life……something we ALL can learn from.

“Rockie” was a real life “Marley and Me” and I’ll miss her devastatingly!

Thank you for helping me through my sorrow…….

Two Skills Every “LEADER” Should Have…But Many Don’t

As a leader in business your ability to “Influence” and “Negotiate” both internally and externally is critical to your business success. These skills come natural to the very few but for most very difficult behaviors to implement. However like many soft skills, influence and negotiation takes time to master and requires continuous learning, implementation, and refinement by anyone who has customers to please.
There are countless books and sources on both topics in your favorite bookstore and while many of these sources are useful I have not come across principles as finely laid out as the Harvard Negotiation Project. The Harvard Negotiation Project discusses a few key principles centered on “Principled Negotiation,” — a practical, proven strategy best suited for on-going business relationships.
Principled Negotiation, a research project at Harvard University that works on negotiation problems and produces improved methods of negotiation and mediation.
It is part of the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, a consortium of scholars and projects from Harvard, MIT, Simons, and Tufts working to improve the theory and practice of conflict resolution.

The problem of reaching agreement is that many negotiations bargain over positions. Each side takes a position, argues for their position, and makes concessions to reach a compromise. This method is called “Positional Bargaining”, but does not tend to produce very good agreements.

·Arguing about positions induces parties to lock themselves into positions that may result into less than optimal agreements.
·Arguing about positions can take longer than focusing on interests because both parties may try to make several offers and counter-offers before they reach an agreement that satisfies their interests.
·Arguing about positions may hurt an ongoing relationship between parties.
·Positional bargaining is even more difficult where there are more than two parties.

Positional bargaining can be appropriate for short-term, one-time agreements. An example might be haggling over the price of a used table at a flea market. For longer-term relationships, positional bargaining can be destructive because of the short term focus.

Let’s look at “Principled Negotiation” where participants negotiate on the merits of the problem. Principled Negotiation places focus on the interests, needs and motivating factors of all parties to create a lasting win/win outcome. As such, it is a better approach than positional bargaining in most situations.
Part of the challenge is to get customer to move from Positional Bargaining to Principled Negotiation. You will be, in effect, “changing the game,” which requires specific understanding of four key principles of negotiation success:

Separate the people from the problem
Focus on interests, not position
Invent options for mutual gain
Use objective criteria

Case Study

1978 Camp David Egyptian-Israeli Negotiations

The Conflict
When the negotiations started, each side’s position were completely opposite each other. Egypt insisted on complete sovereignty over the Sinai Peninsula (which Israel had occupied in the 1967 6-day war), while Israel insisted on keeping control of at least some of the Sinai. Map after map was drawn, each with different dividing lines. None managed to meet the positions of both sides simultaneously.

The Solution
Looking to their interests instead of their positions made it possible to develop a solution. Israel’s interest lay in security; they did not want Egyptian tanks poised on their border ready to roll across at any time. Egypt’s interest lay in sovereignty; the Sinai had been part of Egypt since the time of the Pharaohs. By reframing the conflict in this way, a solution was reached. Egypt was given full sovereignty over the Sinai, but large portions of the area were demilitarized, which assured Israel’s security at the same time.

For more tactical applications of these two critical skills please look for The Principled Negotiation Method in the book Getting to Yes, by Roger Fisher and William Ury.

You’re Fired…..Pharma No Longer Safe Haven

Slide1

You know back in the 80’s and early 90’s (I’m dating myself) the Pharmacetuicals Sales Business was a thriving place to be, you could make very nice money and a very comfortable living in that industry. Back then however it was extremely difficult to get into the industry because of the financial gains and perceived“security”….so you can imagine to this day I have no idea how I landed in the Pharmaceuticals Sales Business other than to say it was a blessing from GOD. My mother still clowns me to this day when I told her I got a job in Pharmaceutical Selling, she was like “Boy, you can’t even pronounced Pharmaceuticals”! hahahaha!!!

Well, the industry that I practically grew up in has gone through a lot of changes some have said for the worst and many have said the changes were predictable even back then.

To help me chop up the subject “You’re Fired”…..Pharma No Longer Safe Haven! Are two partners of mine that have been on the show previously and two cats that are at the top of their present fields and like me practically grew up in the Pharma Business and can share probably more than I can on the present state of the Pharma industry and where it should go. Sid Mallory Vice President Sales at McKesson Health Systems and Gary Stair Vice President Business Development. Both Sid & Gary as I’ve mentioned were guests on a previous show named “Why Failure Is More Important Than Winning In Sales” and you can check out that show in the archives function here on blog talk radio on the home page “The Sales Professional Network” or you can find it on I-Tunes by just typing in the search on I-Tunes “The Sales Professional Network”.
I’m very happy to have back on the show Sid & Gary!

2013 Resolution….losing my “Mind Weight”!

Yes, I made up the term “Mind Weight”….sounds stupid doesn’t it? Hear me out on this one. At the 1st of the year the health and fitness industry makes a boat load of money because everyone’s new year resolution is of course “losing weight”…..and then by March everyone goes back to their usual lives of eating ridiculously. That window of making huge profits is give or take 2 or 3months tops for the “Weight Watchers” of the world.  A resolution that I think should be more focused on is how we ALL free our minds of the toxic/weighted ills of our world. It’s been a very rough few years with the economy, weather….and yes the nightmarish horrific crimes we’ve seen in the last 2 years.

Losing “Mind Weight” is attempting to remove all of those things that cause each us to NOT reflect on what’s important….our faith, family and each other. I’ve personally have had a tough 3 years and I’m hoping 2013 is a bounce back year for me, however, the perspective I’ve loss is to not have a more conscious thought on why the past 3 years might have been the best 3 years for me based on what I’ve learned. The reason for this blog entry is that when I reflect on the past 3 years yeah they’ve been tough business wise but through that I have had a loving wife, two of the greatest dogs in the world, my health and sometimes a witty sense of humor… all hasn’t been lost during the past 3 years for me. This is what I mean by losing “Mind Weight”, the past 3 years I’ve worried selfishly about everything affecting me and not spending more time thinking about the well-being of others and how that in turn can help me therapeutically. The weight of world has been on my mind and I have no one to blame for that but myself and I’ve made the conscious effort to change that going into the 2013 year. Just like trying to lose weight I’ll probably at some point fall off the wagon next year and bring stress to my mind but I’ll have to stay disciplined for this will be one of the biggest goals/resolution I’ve set for myself in a very long time. We’ve all heard the statement “Keeping Life in Perspective” but how many of us really do and what does that really mean???? Well, I’m going to give it the ole homer try and see where it takes me next year. I figure I have very little to lose it’s not something I should lose sleep over right? (haha!!).

If you should choose to do something different next year instead of doing the preverbal losing weight, try losing “Mind Weight” and step outside yourself, reflect, worry less, and help as many as you can…..you may just have the best year of your life in 2013!
